FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – August 21, 2017
I Am B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L., Inc. Receives Invitation to Host a Delegation of Student Athletes from Ivory Coast & Niger
BUFORD, Ga., August 21, 2017 – The Sports Diplomacy Office at the U.S. Department of State conducts sport-based international exchange programs for non-elite athletes, coaches, administrators, and others from the global sports arena. The Sports Visitors Program, shared through a cooperative agreement with George Mason University, brings youth athletes and their coaches to the U.S. for two weeks to explore U.S. society and culture through the lens of sports – from playgrounds to professional leagues. Often groups visit schools to play and interact with peers, engage with organizations that implement sport-based after school activities, and volunteer with community groups while they are in the U.S. On September 18 – 23, 2017, a group of diverse soccer players and their coaches from Niger and the Ivory Coast will visit Atlanta as a part of their two-week visit to the U.S. One of the main objectives of the program is to promote women and youth empowerment and to send the young adults back to their countries with tools they can use to tackle gender, self-esteem, and confidence issues in their own country.
I Am BEAUTIFUL Inc., an award-winning nonprofit organization based in Gwinnett County, GA, was selected to host the group on September 22 from 6pm – 9pm due to the congruence of its program objectives, which are to foster self-esteem and develop leadership skills of girls and women.
I Am BEAUTIFUL, Inc. Co-Founders, Drs. Zenobia Edwards and Tina Woodard accepted the invitation to plan and facilitate this event. “We are pleased to host this group of students to facilitate relationships between I Am BEAUTIFUL young ladies and student athletes from different national and ethnic groups, which will promote cultural understanding and dispel negative stereotypes. We will also teach and demonstrate through sports the nine BEAUTIFUL words: Brave, Energetic, Assertive, Unique, Tenacious, Important, Fabulous, Unequaled and Loved”, stated Dr. Woodard. Dr. Edwards added, “We will equip the delegation with practical tools, confidence and a powerful network of professional women who are volunteers for I Am BEAUTIFUL to support the student athletes’ efforts to share their knowledge and skills with their peers and broader community when they return to their respective countries”.
I Am BEAUTIFUL, Inc. requests support and sponsorships from local businesses and organizations for this event as follows:
- Facilities – Use of a gymnasium or football/soccer field and a meeting room to accommodate 60 people
- Supplies and materials – soccer equipment, t-shirts, learning aids/cards, water bottles
- Refreshments – fruit, pizza, sub-sandwiches, chips, drinks, cake and water
